Where did the "M" go in "MSDS?"
MSDS is no longer the acronym for information about hazardous chemicals. When OSHA revised the Hazard Communication Standard in 2012, it changed the name for chemical data sheets to "Safety Data Sheets" or "SDS" for short.
New persons trained on chemical safety will have little trouble with this new terminology. However, many of us have become used to the term "Material Safety Data Sheet" or "MSDS" for short--and we will have difficulty getting used to the new terminology.
Requirements for the format of the new Safety Data Sheet are an improvement on previous requirements. Some people using SDSs will see little change from what they have been using.
So, don't be surprised if you hear chemical vendors or others referring to SDSs rather than MSDSs.
