Alert: Failure of Airgas strap

7/3/2014

DRS recently learned of a failure of an Airgas strap for compressed gas cylinders. These straps are used to attached compressed gas cylinders to wall or bench mounted brackets. A researcher at Argonne National Laboratory discovered that an Airgas strap could be torn easily, as if it is made of paper.

According to the manufacturer, a large batch of Airgas straps did not receive the required ultraviolet (UV) treatment. The lack of UV treatment is believed to be the source of the failure. The failed Airgas strap is item number Y99STRAP and has the word “Airgas” embroidered on the strap. See the picture below.

The manufacturer has agreed to replace Airgas straps with this item number. If you find any Airgas straps with this item number, please take them out of service immediately and contact DRS at drs@illinois.edu.
